Minutes of Meeting
The August 27th meeting was opened a by President Jonathan Huizingh.
- Steve Gonzales served steadily as Toastmaster. This theme was end of Summer memories.
- Steve Helmke led Prayer & Pledge and served as Sergeant at Arms, helped by Harry Savio who presented the awards.
- Matt Carlin was the Timer. He tried to get us out on time by keeping Table Topics short but speakers & evaluators were collectively over time by 8 & 11 minutes respectively .
- Jonathan Huizingh was Grammarian and chose "malodorous" (meaning having a bad odor) for the word for the day. It was used by creatively by Steve Levering, Rick, and Sonny. He reported there were few Ums but found good use of language.
- Jennifer Wagner was One Minute Toastmaster - 1:38 - Jennifer urged us to read our audience and be flexible to change our speech to reach them.
Table Topics Master was Priscilla Oehlert. Priscilla used an interesting prop of having some participants choose a coin and talk about what happened to them during the year it was minted.
- Mary Buker- 1:50 - Mary reported joining Toastmasters in 2006 and how it changed her life enabling her to participate in fun skits.
- Karen Bondy - winner - 1:26 - Karen gave advice to herself as a 13 year old. Yes, sure you're a teenager but "get over yourself."
- Jack Frick - 1:08 - Jack joined his first Toastmasters in 1979 but was soon transferred. While there he saw the potential of others in the group.
Speaker #1 - Glenn Nielsen - winner - 9:22 - "Bad Drivers" - Glenn told us about his recent visit to Defensive Driving class = adult timeout. Men are distracted by women, cell phones and digging in their nose. Women are distracted by putting on makeup, cell phones, kids, and changing clothes. If pulled over turn off the car, put the keys on the dash, roll down your window and be cooperative with the officer. Maybe you'll get off.
Speaker #2 - Anne Child- 8:15 - "It's not just black & white" - Anne spoke on diversity and a study done indicating that the more diverse community the more the people don't trust anyone. To embrace diversity, we must meet with various groups, learn about and work on their issues to develop trust and brotherhood.
Speaker #3 - Steve Levering - most improved - 12:11 "The Final Box" - Steve told about being an EMS and fire department volunteer, giving service to his community, and saving lives and property. He decided to hang up his shield as we fell through a ceiling during a fire. Her received grateful awards for his service.
General Evaluator was Dan Naden. Toastmaster Steve relied heavily on his notes. Jennnifer has great energy and chose a good topic. Priscilla was clever coming up with the coin purse idea.
- Table topics evaluator was Frank Peters - 1:29 - Mary thought for a few seconds but did not get flustered and was animated. Karen used humor and good eye contact. Jack looked like a pro, he use eye contact, gestures and his voice well.
- Evaluator #1 for Glenn was Rich Bradstreet - winner - 3:12 - Glenn used the following well: 1) energy - his level was right on target 2) New way of thinking "adult timeout" 3) coaching us in a slightly condescending way
- Evaluator #2 for Anne was Lesley Bradstreet - 4:13 - Anne used the study well, guilt the flow of the speech. But she should have pulled in examples other than RESULTS and told more people stories to build emotion into the speech. "Let is go" when you get stuck.
- Evaluator #3 for Steve L. was Scott Perry - 3:35 - Steve opened well, contributing is something we all care about. You could feel your speech in your heart, you didn't need your cards. He use "tell us what your going to say, say it, tell us what you said" but it took a while to get from one to another.
Timer and Grammarian gave their reports.
Sonny Sonntag said Glenn's speech was malodorous but entertaining.
Harry Savio encouraged us to pay into the weekly till.
Jim Comer said he'd just sit down so the meeting could end.
Hollis Baker joined Jim and said his tomatoes are all gone.
Carrie Allen had to leave before the end of the meeting so did not get a chance to speak.
Jonathan reviewed the schedule for our next meeting on Monday September 10th. There will be no meeting next week September 3rd as that is Labor Day.
