Balcones Toastmasters December 10, 2007 Chapter 3407 District 55 Minutes of Meeting

The December 10th meeting was opened by President Jonathan Huizing.

Hollis Baker presented Brenda our gift for taking care of us for the past year. Brenda was appreciative and thanked us for the $200.00

Our guest this morning was Katherine Burns, returning to the workforce after raising her now 4 year old child.

Antoinette Griffin brought the Used Candle Award from the Christmas Party last Saturday for use as our UMMM & AAAGH Award. The best thing about the party was when she asked us to tell about one of the members of Balcones we admired and why.

  • Dan Naden led Prayer & Pledge and served as Sergeant at Arms.
  • Sonny Sontag was our Toastmaster. His theme was, 'What Would You Miss the Most if You Lost Your Sight?'.
  • Steve Helmke Timer, says he would miss watching his children grow up.
  • Mary Buker, the Grammarian, asked us to use 'ACRONYM', and would miss seeing sunsets.
  • Hollis Baker, the One Minute Toastmaster,, would miss the smile on Alice's face. He told us how to prepare a speech: write it out word by perfect word, then reduce it to topics on a 3X5 card, then put the card in our back pocket and never take it out.

Steve Gonzales, Table Topic Master, read The Serenity Prayer then a slightly modified version by a Benedictine Nun about accepting others while recognizing the only person we can change is ourself. He asked different thought provoking questions of each table topic participant:

  • Harry Savio will take a somewhat compassionate, more sensitive approach to advocating his positions. This might change his reputation as Dirty Harry.
  • Priscilla Oehlert, the first born of 4, became a perfectionist who seemed to sometimes disappointed in herself for not meeting her own high standards. Because her Mother would always list her good qualities, she has come to accept herself.
  • Rick Bradstreet reminded us that the infatuation, lustful phase of a relationship brings on the realities of the other person, even possibly irritating quirks. We must realize how normal other people are, and we must accept them for themselves.

Speaker #1 - Glen Nielsen 'Get Prolo' - Glen has lived with pain from sports injuries. Fibroblasts in inflamation help relieve pain by rapidly rebuilding cartilage and collagen in joints. This new therapy of injections of sugar water has helped 90% of the users.

Speaker #2 - Jerry Barrett - 'Hard Drive Proposal' - Jerry would miss seeing his grandkids. This Advance Manual Speech #2 advocated using Roberts Rules of Order and Parliamentary Procedures to enhance effective meetings that don't waste time.

Speaker # 3 - Jonathan Huizingh - 'Video Editing' Jonathan would miss seeing the mountains in Colorado. After making a 3 minute video application to join the TV show, The Amazing Race, he told us a humorous story about starting at the wrong Paul's house while looking for aome help editing.

General Evaluator was John McMillan.

  • Table topics evaluator was Jon Beall evaluated TT speakers on posture, gestures and content.
  • Evaluator #1 for Glen was Scott Perry. Glen had good movement and gestures, but should figure how to pass out brochures less obtrusively.
  • Evaluator #2 for Jerry was Antoinnette. She would miss seeing family and decorations at Christmas. The topic was great for this group of people in business. Jerry's examples from his job built the case for making RRO and PP realistice to all of us.
  • Evaluator #3 for Jonathan H. was Ann Childs. She will miss colors in the Fall and new leaves in the Spring. Jonathan did great humor about the inconsistemcies, and suggested he needs to bring his gestures up.

Timer and Grammarian gave their reports.

Jonathan reviewed the schedule for our next meeting on Monday December 17th which you can reference at http://www.balconestoastmasters.org/schedule/ .
