From Austin Toastmasters (Balcones, Club #3407)

Balcones Toastmasters January 29, 2007 Chapter 3407 District 55 Minutes of Meeting

The meeting was opened by Vice-President Education Mary Buker. A touching Prayer and Pledge was led by Sonny Sontag who also served at Sergeant at Arms for the day.

We had many visitors. Vladimir Garner and his wife Amanda returned for the second time. Jack Frick returned with application and check in hand! Priscilla returned for her third "visit." Tony and Becky were Frank Peter's guests looking to start a Toastmasters group in their organization. Sharon came to observe.

Karen Bondy served as Toastmaster, her first time but she was a natural. The theme was the "Hope". Timer was Gordon Baker. Grammarian was JD Stewart . The word of the day was "missive" which was used sparingly. One Minute Toastmaster was Dan Naden urging us to use any opportunity to speak, creating our "superbowl", our big moment.

Table Topics Master was Hollis Baker. Hollis allowed participants to choose to either to discuss the superbowl or to choose a brown bag item to "sell" to the audience. Table Topic participants were:

  • Jim Comer – selling skin lotion to exterior conscious Americans.
  • Jack Frisk - "whatever is in this bag is exactly what you need!"
  • Vladimir Garner – selling a remote control - your joy or your bane.
  • Jonathan Huizingh - relating Peyton going to the superbowl to the prom queen going to the prom.
  • Anne Child - selling the Hollis Baker doll (winner & most improved)

Speaker #1 Jennifer Wagner - "Prevention" urging us all to help the women in our life move from "working through the pain" and "emergency reaction" modes for health issues to "prevention." She suggested a book "Healthy Women Build Healthy Communities."

Speaker #2 Frank Peters - "A Book worth Reading" - trust is in a state of crisis, described in "The Speed of Trust" by Stephen MR Covey.

Speaker #3 Rick Bradstreet - "Fighting back against alien abductions" inspiring us to notice patterns in our lives and suffer our traits to resist the programming of our personalities... perhaps implanted by aliens. (Winner)

General Evaluator was Lesley Bradstreet.

  • Table Topics evaluator was Antoinette Griffin - Hollis was too nice to offer options, Jack looks like a million bucks, Vladimir is confident, Jonathan was truly imaginative, Anne - keep the funny stuff going. (Winner)
  • Evaluator #1 for Jennifer was Mary Buker - speech was organized well... what's the website for the book?
  • Evaluator #2 for Frank was Phil Hallmark - Frank was authoritative, teased us, used good props and got many of us interested in reading the book.
  • Evaluator #3 for Rick was John McMillen - Rick is thrilled to be here, is creative and knowledgeable, could include quotes.

Control of the meeting was turned back over to Mary Buker. Amanda, Tony, Becky, Priscilla all made comments and Sharon chose not to. Jack Frisk was voted in. Mary read schedule the for our next meeting on February 12th. Check out the details at http://balconestoastmasters.org/wiki/index.php?title=Schedule&action=purge

The meeting was adjourned just a couple minutes after 8:00. With all the visitors and the confirmation of Jack Frisk as a new member, we consider that very timely.
