From Austin Toastmasters (Balcones, Club #3407)
Our brand-new President, Mary Buker, brought a guest this Monday, her sister Kathy Ray. Good to have you Kathy, do return soon and bring that bright smile. I see Mary has the same one.
Speaking of guests, Jerry brought his grandson, George Putman. Norma Fridley and Eileen Edwards, who both work at Time Warner, were guests.
And a great treat in the guest area, Diane Graden, a past member, came to the meeting. Good to have you Diane, we look forward to your rejoining. Another guest was Tony Geishauser, District Public Relations Officer, and member of The Austin Toastmasters Club. Welcome to all.
Table topics were run by Mike Prentice and Fred, Gordon, Steve G, participated.
- Fred discussed “Helping Each Other.”
- Gordon introduced us to one of his neighbors, and taught him to say, “I’m sorry.”
- Steve G. intrigued us with a story from long ago about an ant and a grasshopper.
All performed well and Gordon got the ribbon.
Three most interesting speeches followed. I noticed the line up of speakers all had first names beginning with “S”. I think Jerry has been playing with the schedule again.
- Saul Haro, one of our newest members, gave his “Ice Breaker,” titled “My Father.” With a charming sly grin, Saul not only introduced us to Saul, we got to meet his wise father also. Saul you did a good job, and we will all be looking forward to your next speech.
- Scott Perry gave an intriguing titled speech, “A Bent Nail.” Scott this speech had all the ‘stuff’ of a great speech, which it was. It contained your father; an electrician, your grandfather; a steam train operator, and your children. The line I liked best was, “Daddy, can I help?” Keep on keeping on!
- “William Robert Lowery, or Billy Bob,” was Sonny’s presentation Monday. This was a story from Sonny’s high school days, and is a most inspiring story. Thank you for bringing this encouraging speech to us. Sonny, I guess you know we consider you our “Hero of Balcones,” and we all enjoy your speeches. One day I want you to NOT use the word of the day just for fun, and watch the fire works.
Chief Evaluator Jonathan did a champion job of evaluating our endeavors. Of course he had the help of Jon, Jerry, Vald, and Glenn. All were kind, gentle, encouraging, and helpful, you can’t hardly beat that.
Winners, of course, were all of us, however the ribbon girl, Priscilla, gave out only 4 trophies. Gordon – Table Topics; Jerry – Evaluator; Sonny – Speaker, and Saul
for Most Improved.
Don’t forget to keep Steve Levering in your prayers. Reports say he is doing well, but not jumping fences.
