From Austin Toastmasters (Balcones, Club #3407)

Antoinette Griffin, our Toastmaster of the day guided the meeting masterfully. Her theme was for members were, “Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know.” Wow. We all got an ear full….most interesting.

Harry gave us a “One Minute Toastmaster” offering that caught me by surprise. Harry said he could go to sleep anywhere, anytime, any way. He got us awake quickly with his SAGACIOUS, (wise) remarks, “Nobody gives a damn.” What Harry said before that escaped me, but I will not soon forget the ghosts of Rhett Butler visiting Balcones.

Table Topics, by Anne was a fun time had by all.

  • Gordon flew solo across the Atlantic, almost.
  • Saul, one of the new kids on the block dated his mother in law,
  • while Mary played The Virgin Mary at church.
  • Doug Tankersly, a returning Balcones TM, played basket ball on The beaches of Hawaii,
  • as Jon has lined up a voting scheme involving his mother.

Doug won the Ribbon.

  • Cathy Lovelady, another welcome new member, gave her “Ice Breaker:” “All About the Child.” Cathy’s life is full of loving and working with children. Cathy’s Hill Country News column is, of course, about children. Cathy, we are very privileged to have you as a new member. We hope to challenge you to better speaking skills; I know you will challenge us to keep pace with you. Welcome.

  • Steven Finos, another new member, gave his “Ice Breaker” Monday entitled “Culture Shock:” Steven’s route to Balcones was by way of Japan, Dallas, and Midland to Austin. Somewhere along the way a sojourn in Mexico has spiced his life. Welcome Steven. We will be looking forward to hearing your future speeches. Another challenge for you as well as a challenge for us.

  • Dan Naden brought a speech about a most interesting lady. Dan’s speech is from the “Story Telling” manual and Dan’s title was, “Lessons from Grandma Apple.” What a lovely thought, could we all have such a Grandma. Dan won the ribbon for “Best Speaker.” Job well done!

Jerry performed the duties of General Evaluator. Jerry had good help. Mike, Jonathan, Sonny and Peter pitched in and gave the speakers good advice as well as kudos for a job well done. Jonathan won the coveted “Ribbon.” Speaking of ribbons, Steven Finos won the “Most Improved” ribbon.
