From Austin Toastmasters (Balcones, Club #3407)

Notes by Anne. Hollis Baker did not attend today he spent the morning with his lovely bride Alice (57 years ago today)! They got dressed up, went out for breakfast and shared a coke (I imagine one glass with two straws and love lust eyes). Anne's notes are from memory as it didn't occur to her to take notes until after the meeting. Special thanks to Karen for filling in some details of her speech and Jerry for confirming winners.

President Jonathan Huizingh opened the meeting just about on time.

Scott Perry served as Toastmaster with the cool theme of "favorite frozen desserts."

  • Antoinette Griffin lead us in prayer and pledge.
  • Sonny Sonntag was timer and carefully kept us on time and reported everyone's times.
  • Priscilla Oehlert was grammarian. She introduced us to "Ambrosial" (fragrant or delicious) which was used by Sonny, Scott and one other after Priscilla gave her report. She reported few ums and ahs but kept us all honest.
  • Jerry Barrett filled in at the last minute as One Minute Toastmaster. He got us to do audience participating of laughing with him because "ha, ha, ha, we've been there too"... not knowing what we're going to say.

Dan Naden was Table Topic Master. He kept with the sub-theme of summertime (why we think of frozen treats).

  • Glenn Nielsen related about playing in the canals of New Orleans, his brother falling in with a sack of fundraiser chocolate bars that floated. They scooped them up, dried them off and sold them anyway.
  • Steve Gonzalez - co-winner - also spoke about summers in New Orleans and playing tried and true childhood games like Kick-the-Can and Tag.
  • Jerry Barrett spoke about missing his teacher Mrs. Thomas during the summer. She really made the kids do their best without whapping their knuckles.
  • Antoinette Griffin spent one summer trying to learn Valerie Bertinelli's secrets for beauty and popularity. She says her studies didn't help.
  • Cathy Loveday - co-winner - spent her summers having her sister teach her what her sister learned in school.

Karen Bondy - "Why Conserve?" - Karen impressed upon us the need to conserve water and to water on our scheduled watering days. It is good stewardship, helps with resource planning by the water suppliers to plan peak demand needs, and it is a cost savings to you the consumer!

Anne Child - winner & most improved - "The Little Match Girl" - Anne told this Hans Christian Andersen story of a poor girl's tribulations and visions of her last evening on earth.

We were one speaker short as Gordon Baker came down with a fever only yesterday. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery.

Jonathan Huizingh, General Evaluator, said Jerry's One Minute Toastmaster speech was interesting.

  • Harry Savio squeezed in evaluations of 5 table topics. They all did a great job despite Glenn's protesting of not liking Table Topics. Dan picked questions to which all the participants could relate.
  • Mike Prentice - winner - Mike's review of Karen pointed out some statistics that could have brought her message home to the audience.
  • Jon Beall encouraged us all to put more acting into our speeches as Anne did.

Cathy Loveday was voted into our group, she has already been a wonderful addition.

Mary Buker and returning visitor Steve spoke about their favorite frozen desserts.
